After an Air India Express flight flying 191 passengers skidding off the runway while landing at Calicut Airport in Kerala on Friday evening 7 August, at least two people are presumed dead with many injured.

The Air India Express flight arriving from Dubai overshot the runway as it landed in heavy rain, with the aircraft divided into two as it skidded off the runway, local news channels reported on television.

The incident took place on Friday at around 7:38 pm local time amid very heavy rainfall in the area.

There were 191 passengers on the flight, including crew members. One of the aircraft’s pilots is thought to have been killed in the accident, while around 40 passengers are thought to have been injured.

The Air India Express AXB1344, B737 flight from Dubai to Calicut was part of the Vande Bharat Campaign, intended to bring home stranded people from other countries in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rajiv Jain, a Civil Aviation Ministry spokesperson, said the plane had broken into two impact pieces.

At the time of landing he said no fire had been reported. “There are 174 passengers, 10 children, 2 pilots and 5 cabin crew on board the aircraft. Rescue operations are underway and passengers are taken into hospital as stated in the initial reports,” he said.

“Dubai-Kozhikode Air India flight (IX-1344) skidded at around 7.45 pm today during landing at Karipur Airport,” Kondotty Police told ANI news agency.

Civil Aviation Directorate-General (DGCA) has requested a thorough investigation into the matter.

In the wake of the plane crash at Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ) in Karipur, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has instructed police and fire forces to act urgently.

“Have also instructed officials to take appropriate rescue and medical assistance arrangements,” he said.
