Amazon orders 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz

Amazon Inc said on Friday, as part of the online retailer’s efforts to operate a carbon-neutral company by 2040, it had purchased 1,800 Mercedes-Benz electric vans for its European delivery fleet.

A majority of electric vehicles from the car and vans division of Daimler AG will go into operation this year, the company said, adding it had ordered 1,200 of the larger eSprinter models from Mercedes-Benz and 600 of the mid-size eVitos.

The order is the largest to date for electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, which includes 800 vans for Germany which 500 for the UK.

However, it’s surpassed by Amazon’s latest order for Rivian Automotive LLC’s 100,000 electric delivery vans, a company in which it has invested.

In a report, Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said the Daimler deal was part of the retailer’s “journey to create the world’s most innovative transportation fleet.”

On Friday, Mercedes-Benz entered The Climate Pledge, introduced last year by Amazon, which calls on signatories to become net zero carbon through their companies by 2040. Previously the automaker said it planned to have a carbon-neutral fleet by 2039.
