FG Proposes Morning, Afternoon Lessons Prior To The Actual Resumption Of Schools

The Federal Government has announced that it is proposing the sectionalization of classes for primary , secondary and tertiary institutions in the country prior to reopening the school.

This was clearly communicated by Emeka Nwajiuba, Minister of State for Education, on the day of a briefing on COVID-19 by the Presidential Task Force in Abuja on Wednesday.

The minister further assuaged the rumors that on June 8, schools would resume stressing that the government could not possibly take any significant risks , particularly with regard to the protection of the Nigerian students.

He stated, “If we’re confident these students can go to school, come back healthy and don’t carry up COVID-19 with them and infect others who are more vulnerable than they are, otherwise we’re running a massive threat and God forbid anything happens to our students in our rush, I’m not confident if we would recover what was damaged.

Nwajiuba said the ministry is motivated by the recommendations of both specialists and those from the World Health Organisation, adding that the move to reopen schools in the country will be cautiously reached as education has been on the Nigerian Constitution’s concurrent list.

He noted that perhaps the ministry will compile a description about what it would look like to reopen COVID-19 or post-COVID-19. This will be steered by proper guidance, as well as World Health Organization assistance.

“In a country with more than 115,000 primary schools, you should realize that 35,000 of these private schools have to decide to meet this very same criteria in others to permit students in.

“We could have morning classes and afternoon classes so we’ll be split over the entire network so they can support us. I’m not optimistic we’ll have evening lessons. But in the meantime, we can do it with morning and afternoon, “he clarified.

He pleaded to private school administrators in the country to work with the government to ensure the country ‘s schools resumed safely.
