FG to resolve U.S. visa restrictions on Nigeria

President Buhari have expressed hope that Nigeria is currently making significant progress in reversing the US suspension of issuing “immigrant visas” to passport holders in Nigeria.

The President, who spoke while receiving a report from the Committee on Citizen Data Management and Harmonization, chaired by Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola at Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, demonstrated pleasure that two of the six areas of concern posed by the United States had been fully addressed.

President Buhari set up the committee in February of this year after the American government had placed temporary visa restrictions on Nigerian passport holders.

The President stated in a statement released by the Special Advisor to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, that the suspension, which came into effect on February 21, 2020, did not extend to certain U.S. visas, such as government , business, tourism and student travel visas.

He thanked the committee for its committed diligence in carrying out the task, ensuring the prompt adoption of the committee’s guidelines after proper consideration by the Nigerians and the international community.

He said: “I also note Nigeria ‘s progress towards eliminating the visa restrictions as two out of the six areas of concern posed by the United States have been fully resolved, two are significantly satisfied while some progress is made on the remaining two.

“I am pleased that the United States Government has recognized this development, in particular the uploading of missing and stolen passports and travel documents.”

The committee had recommended, among other items, the creation of a National Criminal Information System, styled according to the INTERPOL model, and a National Criminal DNA Laboratory, to assist in criminal investigation, criminal justice administration and the exchange of relevant information.
