Klopp amazed by the ouput of Liverpool front trio

Jurgen Klopp saluted Mohamed Salah ahead of a Liverpool landmark but admitted that he wasn’t expecting the Egyptian and his fellow forwarders to be as productive as they were.

Three years ago Salah joined the Roma Reds in a contract that supposedly cost an estimated £34million.

Salah – who is usually deployed from the right – has scored 73 goals in 105 Premier League matches, including a record breaking of 32 in 2017-18.

The Egypt superstar has impacted efforts to turn Liverpool into European and domestic champions, his concept of attacking with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane making them a lethal trio under Klopp that scored 250 times.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Arsenal outing, where Salah is expected to make his 150th appearance, Klopp said: “First and foremost, that means he’s been playing 50 games a year, 50 games per season and still counting. Incredible. That is a large number.

“certainly he was lucky and we were lucky he was able to play all these games, because he wasn’t injured, which is good.

“In the time when it became obvious we signed him I was very happy. I recall our conversation when we first met face to face, when we were talking.

“‘What is your favourite? ‘It’d be right-wing, but Sadio Mane’s playing there and he’s been having a pretty good season.’ ‘Yeah, he does, but he can also play the other wing.’

“The beginning was pretty much so. The idea was obvious how we want to play up front with the boys but it played out in a way we couldn’t have anticipated. They’ve scored 250 goals now since they [joined the club], which is an amazing amount.

“For Liverpool it was a good day [when Salah signed] and for Mo it was a really good day because it suits very well and that’s really important in life. You can’t change the world alone but you have a great chance to do it together with the right people around you.

Salah ‘s progress seems sure to lie at Anfield, and Dejan Lovren also seems likely to stay put for the moment.

Last season, the 31-year-old was a marginal player but Klopp says he still cherishes what the Croatian offers.

Even though German would not directly comment on rumors the Reds are to activate a one-year extension option to hold Lovren until 2022, a departure seems impossible.

“Dejan has played excellent games for us, is a very necessary part of the team, absolutely no question,” said Klopp.

“It’s always like this – we’ve got four center halves and normally we ‘re playing with two of them, but we always needed all four, so a very, very important job. He played for us in the final of the Champions League, played a lot of big games and was also a really consistent player.

“Dejan was either in the team or close to the team, or was not available at all. Nothing that had happened, we never had issues. It’s all fine, but [I] don’t have to say anything about the contract situation because there is nothing to answer in public. Only the way it is.

“The situation is quite clear-Dejan is a Liverpool player and we need him. With Joel [Matip] injured, we have just three center halves again in this moment.

“We need the consistency that we have in the centre-half role to be effective, and that’s why there’s really nothing to speak about.”
