The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University nurtures a varied, multidisciplinary community of future leaders from around the world and mentors them as they strive to confront society’s challenging concerns. Scholars will enhance their knowledge, develop skills, and strengthen their character through community activities, workshops, meetings with leaders, domestic and international research excursions, and personal development opportunities as part of the King Global Leadership Program.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars are from each of Stanford’s seven schools. Knight-Hennessy Scholars are exceptional people who belong to an interdisciplinary community of academics. The curriculum provides a foundation for intentional leadership development and equips you to make a large-scale beneficial impact in the world.

Scholarship worth, benefits, and duration:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars get the following benefits throughout their first three years of graduate school:

  • a scholarship that can be used to pay for tuition and other expenses.
  • a stipend to cover living and educational costs (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses)
  • a travel stipend to cover the cost of an economy-class ticket to and from Stanford once a year.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars may also be eligible for supplementary money to help with academic enrichment (e.g., conference travel).


There are two basic requirements for eligibility.

To begin, you must apply to, be admitted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program in addition to enrolling to Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Each incoming Knight-Hennessy Scholar must be a first-year student enrolled in a Stanford graduate program, such as the DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD. There are no discipline or program-specific quotas. It should be noted that students who plan to spend at least two years at Stanford will be given priority attention.

Second, you must have received a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university in January 2015 or later. You must have received a bachelor’s degree by January 2015 or later to apply for the cohort in 2022; you must have gotten a bachelor’s degree by January 2016 or later to apply for the cohort in 2023.

Instructions on how to apply:

The deadline for applications is August 1, 2021.

You must apply to both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and your Stanford graduate degree program separately to be considered for the scholarship. The Knight Hennessy Program has a deadline of October 6, 2021. You must confirm the application deadline for your program on the program’s website, which is frequently sooner.
