Labour NLC to go on strike over hike in fuel & electricity bills

Labour NLC to embark on strike over hike in fuel & electricity bills.

In addition to its national conference of delegates, the highest policy-making body of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC; National Executive Council, NEC, Today, approved and validated the policy of the Central Working Committee of Congress, CWC, to announce a nationwide indefinite strike and mass protest from September 28, 2020 if the government refuse to remedy the recent increases in electricity tariffs and fuel price.

This came as Nigeria’s Trade Union Congress, TUC, extended its seven-day hike notice to 28 September to comply with the NLC deadline for unified labor action against the rise in the price of electricity tariffs and petrol pumps.

The NEC directed the 36 NLC State Councils and the Federal Capital Region, FCT, Abuja, to accelerate the mobilization of workers and other Nigerians at a meeting held at the Labour House of Abuja, faulting the timing of the increases.

Recall that the CWC of the NLC agreed to shut down the economy last Wednesday if the federal government failed to address the recent rise in petrol prices and electricity tariffs prior to September 28.

Speaking after the NEC meeting, NLC President Ayuba Wabba urged the federal government to respond to the complaints of workers and other poor Nigerians in the interest of industrial peace and social order and to reconsider the hikes, stressing that failure to meet the expectations would make the scheduled strike and mass protest unavoidable.
