School To Resume Soon

Nigerian federal government, declared yesterday plans to reopen schools nationwide soon.

During the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 news conference in Abuja, Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made this statement following trendy rumors that the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks. He said this will not be done as speculated in two weeks ‘ time.

The Federal Government has ordered the indefinite closure of educational institutions nationwide as part of measures aimed at alleviating and mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nwajiuba said:-

“When the safety of school children could be guaranteed, schools would be reopened.”

According to him, the government is taking precautions not to put the lives of Nigerian students at risk.

He added that his ministry is working with other relevant stakeholders and government agencies to put in place the necessary measures that would guarantee the safety of students before reopening the schools.

He said:-

“We are all very keen on reopening and I think we’re going to reopen soon. But I can’t confirm what your kids have said we will reopen in two weeks ‘ time.

“The five West African Examination Council (WAEC) countries are meeting and I just came out of a meeting with education ministers of the African Union ( AU), everyone is as concerned as you are. We hope to reopen in a very short time.

“I have met with the Ministry of Science and Technology this morning. We are trying to put in place a program that will disinfect every child when he enters a school and disinfects him when he goes out.

“If we properly fund our schools we will start reopening. But we must be able to ensure that students go safe and come out safe, and not become a vector in society for more infection.
