A minimum of five people were killed, and 40 others, including off-duty police officers, were arrested on Saturday after a South African mega church got attacked by gunmen, over alleged leadership misunderstanding, – the National Police Commissioner reporting.

According to a statement by the top cop of South Africa, General Khehla John Sitole: “Four people were found shot and burnt to death in a car while a fifth victim, a security guard, was also shot fatally in his car while he was apparently attending this complaint.”

The unusually violent incident occurred early Saturday when an armed group raided the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in Zuurbekom, on Johannesburg ‘s western outskirts, “indicating they were coming to take over the property,” police said.

The church has experienced several succession-related clashes widely reported by local media since the death of multimillionaire leader and founder Comforter Glayton Modise in 2016.

Sitole said police responded to reports of “shooting and an suspected situation of hostage,” and confiscated over 34 weapons including five handguns, 16 other guns and 13 pistols.

“I’m sure the joint security forces’ swift response has averted what could have been a more serious blood bath,” said Sitole.

More than 40 people were arrested, including six who were taken to hospital.

These included members of the South African army, National Defense Force, Metro Army in Johannesburg and Correctional Services Department.
