According to the latest report from research firm Gartner, the smartphone market worldwide saw over 20 per cent decline year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020. The report claims shipments have dropped to 295 million because of the negative impact coronavirus has on smartphone sales.

“For most of the second quarter of 2020, almost all major markets, except China, continued to face some form of shelter-in-place restrictions which resulted in continued decline in demand for smartphones,” the report says.

All the companies in the top five have seen their annual performance grow negative. Here’s over for the world’s five biggest smartphone companies.

Samsung

During the second quarter of 2020, South Korean tech giant captured 18.6 per cent market share. The company shipped 54.7 million handsets in the quarter, following a decline of 27.1 per cent.

Apple

Apple is one of the best smartphone brand. During the second quarter of 2020, the company sold 38 million iPhones, with a decline of 0.4 per cent year-over-year.

“Apple’s iPhone sales fared better in the quarter than most of the market’s smartphone vendors and also grew quarter-over-quarter sales,” said Gartner research vice president Annette Zimmermann.

“The expanded business environment in China has helped Apple make the country grow. The introduction of the new iPhone SE further urged older phone users to upgrade their smartphones.

Huawei

Next is Huawei, with shipments of 54.1 million units in Q2 2020. During the quarter, the Chinese company held market share of 18.4 per cent. The company shipped 18.4 million handsets and year-on-year declined 6.8 per cent.

“The performance of Huawei in China has helped it avoid a worst quarterly performance,” said Anshul Gupta, Gartner ‘s senior research director.

“Huawei enlarged its top spot in China where in the second quarter of 2020 it captured 42.6 per cent of China’s smartphone market.

Especially in China, Huawei put in place a combative product introduction and sales promotion and did benefit from strong support from communications service providers for its 5 G smartphones, “he added.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has recovered about 26 million shipments worldwide. The company held market share of 8.9 per cent, a decline of 21.5 per cent year-on-year.

Oppo

Oppo bagged a 15.9 per cent decline over the quarter compared to last year’s same quarter. In the quarter , the company shipped 2,3 million handsets, representing a market share of 8 per cent.
