Xhaka grateful to Arteta for second chance at Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka disclosed that in January he was “very, very close” to leaving the club and appreciated head coach Mikel Arteta for granting him a new chance.

Since being deprived of the captaincy in November, Xhaka seemed poised for the exit for violently responding to fans who ridiculed him when he was substituted during a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace the previous month.

The 27-year-old has also been suspended from the squad for five matches, but he has reclaimed his place and is a regular member of the start line-up again for eight months.

Arteta thanked Xhaka last week for his performances on the field for winning over the fans, but the former Borussia Monchengladbach player revealed that he had seriously considered leaving.

“Nobody knows what happened to me and the fans – or to me, the people. This wasn’t such a good time. It wasn’t a nice moment, “he told BT Sport.

“But perhaps that’s the answer, because I came back better than ever before, and I did learn a lot from it. I hope so do the supporters.

“I’ve always been saying to myself, but I’m a guy who’s going to go 100 percent of every game to the fans as well. The people are beginning to understand me even more now.

“I have to be frank with everyone, I am very straightforward. I was really determined to leave the club. I’ve had a wonderful, great time in this football club until this point.

“But after this, I was, of course, a bit down because I did not expect that from the fans.

“It was never in my mind to quit the club before, but you think about it after this has happened, of course.”

Switzerland ‘s international Xhaka has praised Arteta, who succeeded Unai Emery just under two months after the incident, with turning his career in north London around.
