Zimbabwe sacks minister of health over $20 million scam

Emmerson Mnangagwa, president of Zimbabwe has announced the sack of the health minister, following corruption charges for allegedly crediting a $20 million contract for coronavirus research.

Obadiah Moyo, 66, was arrested last month after an investigation by the anti-graft commission of the southern African nation. He was released on bail and on July 31 is expected to appear before the judge.

Moyo is convicted of awarding a $20 million contract for the supply of personal protective equipment and COVID-19 test kits to Drax Consult SAGL, a Dubai-based company founded only months ago.

After Zimbabwe ‘s opposition criticised the deal, according to local media reports the government abruptly cancelled all contracts with the company.

More than 700 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the landlocked southern African country including nine deaths.
